Why come to the Brecon Beacons?
Craig y Nos Castle is within Brecon Beacons National Park - choc-full of unique and unusual things to do, read on for stunning Attractions, remote and hidden, peaceful places to walk and cycle off-road, rugged scenery, tracks and lanes..

For your memorable Escape to the Country, this slide show introduces you to all the exciting things your group can do in this glorious part of Wales.
Dining in a Castle
For groups of 30 plus, we offer a three course Dinner for guests wanting a Dinner B&B stay.

We are a Dog Friendly B&B and welcome walkers, cyclists, dog friendly B&B, paarty groups, clubs etc.
Where to Dine Out - Gastro Pub
Most nights we offer B&B only, so we can recommend two local Pubs.

First and closest - 1 mile south of us, a fine dining Gastro Pub, the Penycae Inn
Where to Dine Out - informally
Great for real Ales, and a more informal dinner service, check out he Ancient Briton Pub.

This is 2 miles south of us, has a bistro/ burger style bar outside for summer lunches, and a cosy restaurant by the immensely well stocked bar for the evenings. Highly Recommended.
Dog Friendly Lounge with Chesterfields by Fire
By Reception, relax in the Dog Friendly Nicolini lounge after a long walk or day out.

Sit by the fireside, chat among friends. Sink into those leather chesterfield sofas, doze off by the fire, your dogs beside you!
Have a refresher in the Bar
The Patti Bar in the Castle. Also with log burning stove for cool winter evenings.

The Patti Bar is used as a smaller dining room for smaller groups up to 20 guests. Cosy and warm.
Sports Room and Hot Tub
For rainy days, you can keep fit in our Sports Room. Lots of treadmils with a view, exercise bikes, weights equipment.

Also has a hot tub - this needs to be pre-ordered as it is not routinely on due to electric cost.
Walks in woodland behind Castle
No need to take your car. Just walk down the paths behind the castle directly into the neighbouring Country Park.

Though it closes 5 pm, Castle guests can access the Country Park late into the evenings, via the paths from Theatre Gardens.
Off Lead Dog Walks in Country Park
Craig y Nos Country Park has 40 acres of woodland paths and open fields and meadows.

All well fenced in affording lots of opportunity for dogs with good recall to be let off the lead for a jolly good run.

All this, within a few minutes walk from your room.
Climb every Mountain....
Within about 3 miles, park on the Trecastle Road, and explore the Lake up a Mountain.

Park by Bridge, find correct path to Lake as per instructions on our Lady of the Lake page. A climb, a remote lake of Arthurian legend, climb some more for stunning views.

Only attempt this walk in clear weather, otherwise you are up in the clouds. Allow 3 hours plus, good walking boots needed. And good all-weather clothing.
Visit the Local Welsh Show Caves
Just 500 Yards or so north of the Castle, we have the National Showcaves of Wales. Dan yr Ogof Caves. Open in Summer Months.

Well worth a visit and not weather dependent, as you are deep underground in huge caves.
Healthy mountain air, circular Reservoir Walk
The Usk Reservoir is 30 minutes drive up the Trecastle Road. Fresh air and mountain scenery.

You can take a picnic and complete a circular walk or cycle around Usk Reservoir. You can walk around it within 2 - 2.5 hours. Stop for a picnic half way around at picnic table.

Park by the dam so you can find your way back. Free Parking.
Brecon Beacons Mountain Centre
Taking the single track lanes to Heol Senni you can find a most scenic route which gets you to the Brecon Beacons Mountain Centre within about 10 miles.

Much better than the main road way which is about 26 miles!

Lots of sheep so dogs need to be kept on lead here. Very scenic though. Has a nice cafe and Visitors Centre.
Penwyllt Off Road Tracks
Steep climb from Castle up lane to Penwyllt - better to drive up the hill & park at station.

Extensive network of secret mountain tracks into highly remote areas, some climbing, great for very long walks or fit mountain bike riders. I have latterly used a segway but there are a few padlocked gates to climb over.

Incredibly remote, and great open scenery, old rail tracks paths to Brecon.
Alpaca Walking
A recent innovation for the Brecon Beacons, and what a fun and novel activity for a group to do.

Alpaca My Boots is the first animal experience of its kind in the Brecon Beacons. Discover some of the most stunning natural views in Wales, sharing the adventure with friends, family and our adorable gang of fluffy alpacas.
Llangorse Activity Centre
Great for Groups for a Day's worth of activity within a short drive of the Castle.

Looking for a fun-filled family adventure?

Llangorse Activity Centre has activities for all ages and abilities, from rock climbing to horse riding, archery to caving!
Horse Riding next to Castle
The Pentre Riding Stables are opposite Craig y Nos Castle. You can go for a local horse riding trek up in the local mountains and tracks.

Weather dependent, bring warm clothes for being up in the hills. Book in advance of stay. Also offers horse riding lessons in outdoor school next to castle.
Bike Park Wales
For mountain bikers novice to professional, BikePark Wales has UK's most diverse selection of mountain bike trails.

Location: Gethin Woodland Centre Abercanaid Merthyr Tydfil CF48 1YZ

A vehicular uplift service transports you to top of trails, bike & equipment hire, coaching, lovely on site café. All you need for an incredible day on the mountain.
Attractions - Brecon Beacons Mountain Railway
It is well worth going for a ride on the Brecon Mountain Railway.

If it is closed, you can also walk alongside the tracks on woodland paths.
Attractions - Henrhyd Waterfalls
Tallest waterfalls in Wales. Within 10 mins drive of castle.

Steep footpath (can be slippery) down to bridge. You can stand under waterfall. Good walking boots recommended.
Attractions - Caerleon & Camelot
Caerleon was the site of one of Britain's three permanent Roman Legionary Fortresses, and many believe it to be the location of King Arthur's Camelot.

Caerleon has the finest remains of Roman barrack buildings in Europe
Attractions - St. Fagans
This is a stop off point en route to or from the castle back to England. It is off the M4 near Cardiff.

Address: St. Fagans National Museum of Wals, Cardiff CF5 6XB
Brecon - a historic Market Town
Great for a lot of artisan shops, pubs and cafes, not your average 'cloned' High Street. Step back in time almost, a unique little market town.

There's also a nice level scenic canal walk which goes on for miles, leading eventually to Talybont on Usk (7 miles).

Brecon Jazz of course is well worth attending for a huge range of live music over several days.
Excursions - Elan Village & Reservoirs
Try and visit all three Reservoirs: Claerwen Reservoir, Craig Goch Reservoir, Garreg ddu Reservoir.

You can walk or cycle partly around some of these or just have short walk along the dam at each one.

Scenic drives around pretty winding lanes circling several reservoirs.

Cycling and long walks around the reservoirs and dams. All very scenic, very wild, very remote.
Excursions - Laugharne Castle
Allow an hour to wander around the castle, outside it, peer into the Dylan Thomas garage (a shed where he worked and wrote). Pop into the boat house tea rooms.

Walk along some cobbled streets in the old part of Laugharne, behind the castle.
Excursions - Caerphilly Castle
Worth Stopping off when en route to or from the Castle.

Caerphilly Castle is one of the greatest medieval castles of western Europe.

This is the largest Castle in Britain after Windsor. As you can see, Dr. Who has stayed here.
Excursions - Dinefwr Castle
People have lived at Dinefwr for more than 2,000 years.

Buried under the parkland are an Iron Age farm, two Roman forts and an 'English' town created by Edward I about 700 years ago.

Still standing is the castle, created by the Lord Rhys and rebuilt over the centuries to leave the great building we see today.
Events - Murder Mystery Dinners
Book a Group or Family Table at one of our Murder Mystery Dinners - with B&B.

Create your own table and see if you can beat the other tables in discovering the murderer.

Murder Mystery Dinners are held once every two months. We also host an annual Murder Mystery Weekend.
Events - Monthly Ghost Hunts
Once a month, mostly in the winter months, we hold a Ghost Hunt. These are run in groups of 15, and couples and individuals can join.

Or you can host your own private ghost tour if there are at least 10 - 15 of you.
Group stays of 3 - 5 days
See some ideas and a little itinerary for what you can do on a 5 day stay here.

Use this itinerary and the earlier slides in this slideshow to plan your group / holiday activities and outings.

Wales on Line Review of Craig y Nos Castle
10th May 2023

"The little known haunted gothic mansion with gorgeous and tranquil grounds you can just lose yourself in...."

Nestled half way between Swansea and Brecon is a stunning gothic mansion which looks as though it has leapt straight off the page of a romantic fairytale book. Built in roughly 1841 on what is now the A4067 between Pen-y-Cae and Glyntawe, and steeped in history, it's no wonder why the impressive building, with its ornate stone facade, is said to be... read more..

Why is Craig y Nos Castle such a great place for Dogs?  If your dog could only tell you.....

Here's a dog friendly Castle in Wales. Surrounded by Mountains. I'll show this to my owner.

It has nice walks for me in its dog friendly grounds, plenty of space to roam freely off the lead. I won't get lost, but if I do, their dog friendly parkland is all fenced in.

Dog Friendly B&B - Craig y Nos Castle in Wales

Lots of dogs come here, and I can chase after all the exciting new scents.

There's a river I can swim in, and a lake I can take a dip in. My owner can throw stones and sticks for me in the river. It is nice and shallow and I can bound across to the other side and back.

Dog Friendly B&B - Craig y Nos Castle Sheeba in Wales

Plenty of gardens and informal long grassy areas where I can run freely - that's nice. 11 Acres of land at my Castle in Wales and 40 acres of dog friendly Country Park I can explore.

The water looks cool and clear. Unlike Jack on the left, I promise I won't get muddy.

I'll stick to the gravelled paths, but if I do stray into the fields and have a good roll, I promise I'll have a wash after in the river's sparkling mountain water.

Dog Friendly B&B - Jack the Dog all muddy from rolling in some cow muck on Pennwyllt rail tracks path

By evening I'll keep my owner company in the dog friendly Patti Bar, where dogs are allowed to sit with their owners.

I see dogs come free, so there is no extra charge for me to come with my owner.

Let's keep my master and mistress company, and save on kennel fees!  After all, I know they'd be lonely and miss me if I didn't come with them!

That's Jack, the Castle's Golden Retriever and the white Alsatian is Sheeba.

I'd better have a look through the Castle's dog friendly accommodation now. Let's see if I can find a large enough room for me to lie down comfortably in, for the night.

Parkland to roam free, off the lead

I've heard on the dog-line there be rabbits here - and moles too (ssshhhhh).  It's a castle, so there's plenty of space for me and my owner to stretch our legs.
