Dog Friendly Article: Dog House Training Tips That Work

Dog House Training Basics

When you first introduce a new dog in the home, it is important to limit the amount of space they have to roam. That means confining them in an area not much bigger than they are. Some owners do it with a cage, while others prefer to put it in a small room or other area that is usually cordoned off with a baby gate. This is important to do because dogs will not want to go to the bathroom where their den is. In other words, they don't want to do their business where they sleep.

About once every hour or two, let the dog out and take them on leash to the area outside where you want them to go. They should have to go to the bathroom by this time if they haven't already done so in the cage or area. If they did, don't punish the dog, however gently tell them no and then take them outside. What you are trying to achieve is to get the dog to associate going to the bathroom with being outside. The more this is repeated, the faster the dog will get the hint.

Another popular method with dog house training is to use newspaper as a tool to lure them outside. The idea behind this method is to have them do their business on the paper, and then bring the paper outside with them and set it down in the designated area you want them to go in. They will be able to make the association with the smell on the paper and outside after some repetition.

Be a Good Trainer

Just like any other kind of training, dogs respond to positive reinforcement, association and repetition. They also need a schedule to follow as well. Routines are important to our canine companions, but the good news is that you can establish the dog on your own schedule. But, you will have more success with dog house training if you are more stable in the routines that you set for them to follow.

Dogs make a lot of mistakes, but they also love to please. The more patient you are with them will help them to respect and admire you, which increases their drive to be the dog you want them to be. Dog house training is the most difficult training you will have to do, and it really is not that hard to do at all. The good news is that as you go through the process, you will establish a rapport and bond with your pet that will last longer than the accidents in the house.
